Document Summary

In human nature, we make moral distinctions and we judge things to be good and bad. Hume says we do empathize with other people. Hume considers the problem of a sensible knave. An immoral person would say that they can do something immoral and it won"t affect anyone. Kant is going to look for something that is universally authoritative. He"s looking for some principle that is going to carry authority for all agents. This is going to be related to him to find something that is going to be unqualifiably good. Kant is looking the supreme principle of morality. Morality"s demands apply to you whether you like it or not. Moral duties are necessary and are universal (preface, page 2) Anything that counts as a moral law has to be necessary and universal. Kant"s task is seeking out and establishing the principle of morality. The foundations of morality must come from something like society"s rules, emotions, god"s command.
