PHIL 3265 Lecture 14: Jackson’s epiphenomenal qualia
Document Summary
Qualia : the internal and subjective component of sense perceptions, arising from stimulation of the senses by phenomena. Phenomenal aspect of red as opposed to redness of qualia, qualia gets deeper than the phenomena which is just being aware , qualia includes feeling. Types of dualism: cartesian substance dualism, property dualism -> some objects have non physical properties, epiphenomenalism. Qualia is just a (happy) by product of physical evolution. > does not apply to free will because it"s a claim about qualia not all mental states. What jackson has proven is not that physicalism is false but that the only way to learn about some physical facts is to experience them. Materialism : ontological thesis -> only has to do with what is. Physicalism : epistemological thesis -> physical sciences can explain everything. What jackson and nagel have shown is that materialism and physicalism are not the same and that even though materialism is true, physicalism is false.
