Your behavioural mechanisms is not the same as our self. Is morality meant to be public or private. Conscious is not centeral it is not our rational thought it is not rational thought. Psychocoanalysis is not the only tool for psycho analysis. Vocalubalry is a tool rather than mirrors. Moral discourse less adhoc narratives help save soul. In particular freud contributed to decentering of human beings. Darwin- we are one species among others. Freud- mad it hard for ourselves to having a center or an essense: hume- mind not as immaterial substance. But a network of beliefs and desires. Roherty- hume did have any deep implications for our moral consciousness. Hume was a compatibilist- freedom and determinism: freud- more disturbing. Roherty and davidson- see unconscious as consisting of different persons or quasi persons. Freud- not one self there is more than one quasi self. Harder to say there is a real you or true you.
