Book 1 lays out what aristotle thinks the polis is. The reason he has taken this type of inquiry, is because the poleis that exist now aren"t. In book 2, he now inquires into what type of political association is best that good. Investigating these existing poleis, people think they are good poleis, sparta. He is not going to set up a city of words just yet. He wants to consider various theories on what they best polis should look like. The existing polis were admired because of their political stability. These poleis managed to survive the political turmoil of the ancient greek world. He also wants to investigate the polis that are put up by theorists like plato"s republic. Aristotle seems to be a poor student of plato. His existing criticism seems not to understand even the basic structures of the republic. He pulls out things that seem obvious.
