Document Summary

Regionalism - political identity based on a shared sense of place. It may be linked to a variety of cultural, economic, institutional, and historical factors that tend to distinguish the inhabitants of one region of a country from those of other regions. Donald smiley, once identified regionalism as one of the 3 fundamental axes of canadian politics. It was, he rightly noted, the source of major political divisions and controversies throughout canada"s history. And it continues to be one of the defining features of canada"s political landscape today. James madison argued that that a large territory encompassing a greater diversity of regional interests was more likely to provide protection for personal freedoms, group rights, and sectional interests than would a smaller, more homogenous country. Small countries w/ comparatively homogeneous populations were incapable of maintaining respect for individual and minority right. The majority would inevitably exercise a sort of tyranny, using their superior numbers to oppress the rights of others.
