Slaves are slaves by nature because nature has not allowed them with rationality. Position of women in that environment, is that women are not rational. Concept of rationality over the course of centuries has been a weapon against one group: not treating them as equal beings. Okin is afraid that rationality is more than reasonable description of humans rather than a weapon against some. Concept of rationality has been linked to biology. Biological differences in people which endow some with rationality. Sex the biological parts one is born with. Gender the social aspect of how one identify themselves. Gender is how different sorts of people are given privileges, power, etc. in society. Most societies have organized the powers, rights, duties, etc. along sex-lines. For example: men get this, while women get this. Gender is a social position given to some beings in our society because they have that particular body.
