Pols 1000 introduction to politics lecture week 4. Transition to democracy: at its origins, the polis will be aristocratic, demands of the merchants and peasant will be so strong they will bring conflict and division to the polis. He is elevated about the conflict in order to great a piece of legislation capable of avoiding a civil war: this individual chosen was agreeable to all. Not sure how he was actually chosen: once the new legislation is active or becomes law, the same legislator would resign his special powers and would leave polis and no longer partake in political life of athens. September 26, 2018: solon will abolish debt slaves; this is a measure that would particularly affect the peasants. He also abolished debts owned by the peasants to the aristocrats: he will also introduce certain economic reforms that will lead to specialization, e. g. Encourage farmers to specialize depending on the type of terrain you have.
