Document Summary

Pols 1000 introduction to politics lecture week 5. Review on last week: the transition into democracy will arrive through the great legislators, when democracy will appear, it will be recognized as democracy and isonomy (equality in the law, and equal participation in the law). In athens there was 10 demes, and each of these tribes would select 50 of their members (30+ years of age): not all 500 members would sit on council at the same time. Each deme (of 50) would exercise power for 36 days (prytanie) and they would organize 4. They did not use the lottery system because it was convenient. At its origins, the athenians thought that by choosing via the lottery system, they were simply letting the gods decide. In addition, use of the lottery system will allow for the rotation of public office holders, or presidents etc: no one person could hold onto a role making it difficult to concentrate power.
