Pols 1000 introduction to politics lecture week 19. Review on last week: two most important authorities: science and liberty. Which one will be stronger: liberty trumps science. There is no science of the good: totalitarian regimes founded their hold on power through science. We need to neutralize the potential of these values. And beliefs by entering them into private matters. In this particular context, science and reason are considered to be value neutral. They do not and cannot say how we should live: consider science and reason to be methods that help us get results, this implies that the social world is governed by science and reason. This choice will not necessarily be based upon reason. We know that our choice of gods will necessarily enter into conflict with someone else"s choice of gods: there will be a conflict to values between individuals in western, liberal democracies.
