Republic is set in athens, it is a polis = city-state. B. c. e politics formed around city-states / empires. Aristotle made dialogues to represent real conversations between friends. Note, not all of his friends were philosophers but all talk about philosophy. Conversations are not in linear fashion but circle on themselves. Begins talking about a topic, returns to the beginning to advance the point to a higher level which leads to greater conceptual sophistication. The major teaching is found at the end of the story. Story is like a puzzle so readers participate in dialogue. For example, glaucan & adiemantus were socrates" brother. Athens had a class structure where aristocrats are a minority ( about 20%: women have no place in public life, they ran the home. Philosophy operates on reason as well as emotion. Book 1- glaucon is most inclined to find the life of states-mind attractive. Most likely to become s politician and shows greatest aptitude for philosophy.
