POLS 2950 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Bp, Mohammad Mosaddegh, Gamal Abdel Nasser
Document Summary
Middle east and hindrances to political democracy. Muslim - somebody from a particular religious belief. Arab - those born in particular areas of the world, speakers of arabic language. Iranians are not arabs - they speak persian. Colonies of exploitation, not the colonies of settlement (canada, us, australia, etc. ) Having a colonial experience is negative for the prospects of democracy - areas of the world where colonization occurred has problematic democracies. Seems to be a link between non-colonized areas having a strong democracy. Countries from middle east - oil rich - thus lots of interest in controlling these countries from afar. Were not colonized as latin american and african countries were, but nonetheless a great deal of interference and intervention. Northern countries are richest and have political democracy. Global south countries tend to have high poverty rates. However, costa rica - poor country with low gdp per capita - but has been a democracy for as long as germany.
