Kant"s what is enlightenment isn"t an event or anything, it is an exit from a mentality. So what is the difference between the past mentality and the new one? (cid:1) (cid:1) It is a way out from immaturity- a certain state of our will that makes us accept someone elses authority to lead us in areas where the use of reason is called for (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) Spiritual director takes the place of our conscience. Enlightenment then is a modification of the preexisting relation between will, authority and the use of reason. (cid:1) It is a task, process and obligation. We must have the courage to know ( dare to know ) (cid:1) Thus it is a personal act of courage as well as a collective process (cid:1) His use of the word mankind both refers to all the people who are living through this process and a change in what humanity is defined as.
