Lecture 1: race and racism, fluidity of meaning. Tied to racism: paradox of meaning race in everyday life. Race = not natural category changes in meaning as it interacts. Series of social relation which is intertwined with other social relation = fluidity. Identity/ difference/ otherness: problematic naturalizatory essentialization (race as a thing) More than skin colours ethnicity / religion/ identity / nations define as member of group o tot exclude. Race = ill defined mean different thing. No essential/ intrinsic meaning even though it means a lot to people. No biological factor/bases not transcendent quality socially constructed. Practise of racism tied closely to race. Dominant group exerting power justified by race vague defining race very vague as a category. For racism to operate people have to be racialized: racialization way everyone is categorized (defining people) racialization differentiating. Discourse of science no scientific distinction by difference made on the basis of biology.
