POLS 4212 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Political Ethics, Major Second, Sparknotes
Document Summary
Ethics deals well at the individual level. For many, machiavelli is an odd place to start when it comes to political ethics as he is immoral, amoral, unethical. He will separate personal ethics from politics. He says you can"t attach these two together, if you do, you won"t survive in the political world (chapter 15) Many scholars have said that he is separating ethics from politics. But many believe that they should be combined. He says perhaps politics has its own ethics, and that is why its important to understand what he"s doing because it will give us a grounding in understanding ethics in a specific way. The idea of the application is the power struggles between international powers not in domestic politics although it can be applied there but machiavelli is not concerned with that aspect. He starts what is called the realist tradition in political theory, especially in the idea of international relations.
