Document Summary

Psychological disorder- (a syndrome marked by a clinically significant disturbance in an individual"s cognition, emotion regulation, or behavior). A psychological disorder is a syndrome, a collection of symptoms. Disturbed, or dysfunctional thoughts, emotions, or behaviors are maladaptive they interfere with normal day- to- day life: and occasional sad moods that persist and become disabling may likewise signal a psychological disorder. Distress often accompanies dysfunctional behaviors: the stigma and distress that gay, lesbian, and transsexual people often experience can increase the risk of mental health problems. A lawyer is distressed by feeling the need to wash his hands 100 times a day. He has no time to meet with clients, and his colleagues are wondering about his competence. His behavior would probably be labeled disordered, because it is maladaptive, it interferes with his day- to- day life. The way we view a problem influences how we try to solve it.
