PSYC 1010 REBECCA JUBIS Wednesday, September 19 & 26, 2012 FREUD’S PSYCHOANALYTIC THEORY - Freud 1856-1939   - Father of psychotherapy - Began treating patient who had problems (e.g. women who developed paralysis or deafness which had no underlying physical cause)  On the basis of these patients he encountered, he came up with a theory of personality INTINCTS: basic building blocks Freud made a distinction between 2 types of instincts: a)Life Instincts   Libido- sexual instincts b)Death Instincts  People born with aggressive and destructive tendencies. Nothing we can do about that but try to keep these instincts in control STRUCTURES OF PERSONALITY ID - Contains the instincts  - Only structure present at birth  - Unconscious and has no contact with reality  - Irrational and amoral (has no morals)  - Seeks self-indulgence and strives for immediate gratification  - Based on the pleasure principle  - Can reduce tension (instinctual energy) in 2 ways: 1)Reflex activity (e.g. sucking reflex in infants) 2) Primary-Process thinking (fantasizing) EGO - Develops around 13-15 months - Helps the id gain real, rather than imaginary, satisfaction - It is in contact with reality - Strives for delay of gratification - Uses secondary process thinking (real thinking) (conscious, in touch with reality) - Based on the reality principle SUPEREGO - Develops ~4 years  - Moralistic (preoccupied with what‟s right and wrong) - Contains society‟s values and ideals - Allows for self-control - Seeks perfection - tries to block all gratification - Based on the moral principle PSYCHOSEXUAL DEVELOPMENT EROGENOUS ZONE (EZ): zones that need pleasure-producing stimulation to reduce tension  ORAL STAGE (birth to 15 months)  - EZ: mouth If baby always satisfied, grow up to believe world revolves around them, selfish, optimistic. - According to Freud, if you‟re needs were not satisfied when an infant, you are going up to be pessimistic and develop substitute behaviors (e.g. bite nails, smoke) 2) ANAL STAGE (~18 months)   EZ: anus   Child gets pleasure from elimination and retention of feces 3) PHALLIC STAGE (~4 years)   EZ: genitals    Freud believes this stage was the most important in terms of psychosexual development in terms of how it affects your later behavior (resolution) 4) LATENCY STAGE (5 years –
