You have to make a choice between the two, ad this can create stress. Approach conflict: where you have 2 end goals/behaviours that end simultaneously. Avoidance conflict: where both end goals are negative. Approach avoidance conflict: where 2 end goals exist but one is positive and the other is negative. Cognitive dissonance: the state of having inconsistent beliefs and attitudes relating to behavioural decisions and attitude changes. General adaptation syndrome (selye 1930ish: problem-focussed coping, we try to remove or change the stressor directly, emotion-focussed coping, reduce the negative emotional responses. Durability to cope with stress is influenced by: our percured personal control. Lack of control can lead to learned helplessness: interval vs external locus of control, explanation style, pessimistic or optimistic, social support.
