Introduction to personality and psychodynamic theories (module 46): In the process of speaking with people, he came up with this theory of personality in an attempt to explain the personality. We are governed by the unconscious conflicts. Still stresses the importance of the unconscious. Talked about instincts (basic-building blocks) and how we are born with them and can"t get rid of them. Life instincts: energy associated with biological needs. Have to go through life to keep them both in control. Eventually, energy has to be released in one way or another. Structural personality (all of them are at a battle): 3 structures (theoretically) that are interacting with one another at all times. The way they interact (clash, get along, etc. ) influences our behaviour. Unconscious and has no contact with reality. Helps the id become satisfied in socially acceptable ways. Based on moral principle preconscious: mental events can become conscious through attention.
