Document Summary

Aristotle"s theory of memory: memories are the result of similarity, contrast, contiguity. Descrates argued for the dualism of the body and mind, that they were separate and differentwith the mind being immaterial and the province of god. Processes and functions, such as memory, perception, dreaming and dreams are properties of the body and can be understood in a naturalistic way. Psychology"s intellectual parents are physiology and philosophy. According to wundt, psychology"s primary focus was consciousness. Structuralism and functionalism are the first two major schools in psychology. Structuralism was based on discovering the elements of consciousness and how they are related. Most of their work was on sensation and perception. Introspection is the careful systematic self-observation of one"s own conscious experiences. Functionalists wanted to understand the flow of thoughts itself instead of just static points in that flow. Functionalism fostered the development of behaviorism and applied psychology.
