The Cognitive-Developmental Perspective the cognitive-developmental perspective
focuses on how children think and on how their thinking changes as they grow.
Jean Piaget (18961980) proposed the best known of these theories.
He believed that children naturally try to make sense of their world.
That is, throughout infancy, childhood, and adolescence, youngsters want to understand
the workings of both the physical and the social world.
For eaple, ifats at to ko aout ojets: What happes he I push this toy
o" the tale?
Ad aies at to ko aout people: Who is this perso ho feeds ad ares for
e?
Piaget argued that as children try to comprehend their world, they act like scientists in
creating theories about the physical and social worlds.
They try to weave all that they know about objects and people into a complete theory.
Childre’s theories are tested dail  eperiee eause their theories lead the to
expect certain things to happen.
As with real scientific theories, when the predited eets our, a hild’s elief i her
theory grows stronger.
When the predicted events do not occur, the child must revise her theory.
For example, think about the baby in the photo and her theory of objects like the rattle
she’s holdig.
Her theor of ojets ight ilude the idea that If I let go, the rattle ill fall to the
floor.
