Conditions on experimentation for causality o o o. Cannot be manipulated, but is still an iv. People 50+ might have a diferent view of cell phones because of the music they grew up with. Experiments that use subject variables are called quasi-experimental. Variables on no interest and must be controlled. Confound: an extraneous variable that co-varies with the iv and could provide an alternative explanation to the data found. Random assignment can be used to control for extraneous variables and works best with large samples. Between subjects: diferent people in each condition, needed when: If participation in one condition could afect performance in another: we must avoid confounds from non-equivalent groups (ideally, the only diference between groups is the iv) If there is no control, then maturation efects could happen (efects due to time) History efects: efects that occur between pre and post test, unrelated to the study that could change results.
