Language was seen as what separated humans from animals for the longest time. But it has become clear that all animals have some basic form a language, too. Arguments against purely genetic explanation include the productivity of novel phrases and statements, as well as the variety of languages and grammatical structures. If language was purely genetic we would all speak the same language using the same words for the most part. Often it is because they get rewarded without using language (ex. Noam chomsky came up with nativistic theory: said language acquisition must have a biological basis. It occurs during a period of development when cognitive abilities are relatively immature. All theories explain different parts of language; theories can overlap and explain different components of language development. Opposed to conditioning basis of language development: children are not explicitly reinforced for language production or accuracy. Imitation would require exposure to accurate models of language.
