PSYC 2130 Lecture 8: CHAPTER 9
Document Summary
A great deal of your behavior is determined not by your free will, but by your biology. Species-specific behavior patterns exist in all life forms. How you brush your teeth may be unique, but aspects of how you secure resources, seek out a mate, and provide for your offspring are determined to a great extent by your membership in the species homosapiens. Neurochemistry- speculation about the biological contribution to personality can be traced back to the body humors of hippocrates. Modern personality theorizing is not based on body humors; however, neurochemistry (chemical actions in the nervous system) certainly has a prominent role in the theorizing of the biologically based approach to personality. Also of interest are the role of genetics and inheritance, as well as evolutionary processes that may have served to shape human behavior patterns. Temperament, mentality, behavior, personality these things depend in manifold ways on the genes.
