PSYC 2130 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Repressor, Extraversion And Introversion, Unconscious Mind
Document Summary
Ppl are very convinced of certain things that are actually false (false certainty) Heuristics - shortcuts for deciding; adaptive, to func"n in over-stimulating world. Important + useful info gets attention & extraneous info ignored. Happens automatically + unconsciously, based on schemas representativeness heuristic. Phenomena that are functionally related should resemble one another, and phenomena that resemble one another should be functional related. Usually correct b/c effects usually resemble their causes; links causes w/ likely fx. Facilitates decisive action under uncertainty; but sometimes misleading. {quite + introverted: truck driver not librarian but representativeness leads you to think librarian even though base rates are higher for truck drivers} over-interpreting chance - focus on vivid info b/c it has the most impact. Brain creates patterns in randomness b/c always distills order from chaos, even if order doesn"t exist there; do this w/ beliefs too: no ideas so make stuff up. Mundane info automatically ignored b/c they have less identifying value than vivid stimuli.
