Functions of sleep: resting muscles, decreasing metabolism, performing cellular maintenance in neurons, reorganizing synapses, strengthening memories. Describe the sleep disorders discussed in class (6 = nisrns) Occasional cataplexy: muscle weakness triggered by strong emotions. Sleep paralysis: inability to move while falling asleep or waking up. Hypnagogic hallucinations: dreamlike experiences: caused by lack of hypothalamus cells that produce and release orexin, treatment: stimulant drugs.
