Document Summary

18th and 19th century people didn"t think psychology was a science, the idea that it was started in about 1800 in germany. Wilhelm wundt: created experimental introspection that never caught on in america. Descartes: thought the mind and body were separate but the mind was immaterial. The mind was centered in the pineal gland. Immanual kant (germany: 1724-1804): thought that there are 2 domains of reality; one outside the mind and one in it. External mind: consists of objects in a pure state that have existence independent of human existence (noumenal world). Thought that this world can never be known completely because our perceptions are not pre representations. When the noumenal world encounters the mind it becomes transformed into the phenomenal world (humans can never experience true reality only their experience of it) Kant"s perception of the mind is active. Transformation had rules such as the mind always locates phenomena in time and space.
