Lecture 77
i. According to Adler, individuals who are overwhelmed by feelingsof
inferiority instead of being motivated by them have an inferiority
complex.
1. Thus, feelings of inferiority can act as a stimulus for
positive growth or as a disabling force, depending on
one’s attitude toward them.
a. Hans Vaihinger’s philosophy of “as if” influenced Adler’s theory.
ii. Adler applied Vaihinger’s concept of fiction to the lives of
individuals.
1. Like Vaihinger, Adler believed that life is inherently
meaningless, and therefore whatever meaning life has
must be assigned to it by the individual.
iii. A person’s worldview develops from early experiences as a child.
1. The first invention of meaning in a person’s life, then, is
the creation of a worldview.
2. Once a worldview develops, the child ponders how to
live in the world as he or she perceives it.
a. The child begins to plan his or her future by
creating what Adler at various times called
“fictional finalisms,” “guiding self-ideals,” or
“guiding fictions.”
