PSYC 3140 Lecture Notes - Lecture 63: Neurophysiology, Countertransference, Electrotherapy
PSYC 3140
Lecture 63
i. Freud’s historically significant accomplishment was to take all the
conceptions from his philosophical and scientific heritage and
synthesize them into a comprehensive theory of personality.
ii. Prior to meeting Breuer, Freud was a materialistic-positivistic
physiologist: he sought to explain all disorders, including hysteria,
on in terms of neurophysiology (viewed psychological explanations
of illness as nonscientific).
1. He initially treated hysteria with traditional methods of
treating neurological disorders – baths, massage,
electrotherapy, and rest cures but found them
ineffective.
2. Freud then combined Breuer’s cathartic method and
Charcot’s hypnosis to treat hysteria.
b. posthypnotic suggestion and Posthypnotic Amnesia
i. The idea that intact idea that a person was unaware of could play
an important role in that person’s behavior confirmed what Freud
learned for Charcot and became extremely important part of
psychoanalysis. (as well as posthypnotic amnesia)
ii. Resistance: While in psychoanalysis, the patient stops short of
realizing the crucial event.
1. Resistance is a sign that the therapist is on the right
track.
c. Pressure technique – putting your hand on a patients forehead
and declaring that additional information was forthcoming
