Lecture 76
Criticisms of Jung
o Jung’s theory was criticized for embracing occultism,
spiritualism, mysticism, and religion.
o Jung was unscientific or even antiscientific because he used
such things as the symbols found in art religion, and human
fantasy to develop and verify his theory.
o The concept of the archetype, which is central to Jung’s
theory, has been criticized for being metaphysical and
unverifiable.
o Some have referred to Jung’s theory in general as unclear,
incomprehensible, inconsistent, and, in places, contradictory.
o Finally, Jung has been criticized for employing the
Lamarckian notion of the inheritance
o of acquired characteristics.
Contributions of Jung
o Jung’s notions of introversion and extroversion have
stimulated much research and are part of several popular
personality testsfor example, the MMPI Minnesota
Multiphasic Personality Inventory and the MyersBriggs
Type Indicator.
o Also, Jung’s concepts of introversion and extroversion were
major components of Hans J. Eysenck’s influential theory of
personality.
