Lecture 83
▪ Becoming A characteristic of the authentic life because the
authentic person is always becoming something other than
what he or she was.
• Becoming is the normal, healthy psychological growth
of a human being.
▪ Anxiety The feeling that results when one confronts the
unknown, as when one contemplates death or when one’s
choices carry one into new life circumstances.
• ***Heidegger believed that when individuals exercised
their freedom, the experienced anxiety, and if they did
not, they experienced guilt.
• *** For Heidegger, freedom and both anxiety and
responsibility went hand in hand
• One reason for this anxiety is that authentic people are
always experimenting with life, always taking chances,
and always becoming.
• Another reason that exercising one’s freedom in life
causes anxiety is that it makes one responsible for the
consequences of those choices.
• Because acceptance of the fact that at some time in
the future we will be nothing causes anxiety, such
acceptance takes courage.
