Psychoanalytic term, has to do with idea of keeping at bay, out of awareness certain feelings and impulses. People are governed, in part, by their sexual desires. Freud realized that many people are internally conflicted by these sexual desires. Internal conflict: we think we know ourselves, and everything about us. But, we do things that we are not aware of sometimes, and it makes us feel uncomfortable that we do things like this. ex. People who are scientific and rational, think they know what they do and what governs their behaviour. -> freud says that we do not know what we do, and that sexual desires plays a part in what we do.
