In 2012, 17% of canadians aged 15 and older perceived themselves as having had a need for mental health care in the past 12 months. In any given year, 1 in 5 canadians experiences a mental health or addition problem. 70% of problems have their onset during childhood or adolescence. Persons aged 15 to 24 are more likely to experience mental illness and/or substances use disorders than any other age group. Between 23% and 67% of homeless people report having a mental illness. Statistical deviance: behavior that is unusual, that departs from the social norm, or is socially unacceptable, deviant behavior is not always abnormal. Context is very important: what is deviant varies greatly from society to society, from subculture to culture. Severe personal distress: some therapists believe that this is the key element of abnormality. But sometimes distress is an appropriate response.
