Begin w. specific premises that are true, & judge whether those premises allow a particular conclusion to be drawn, using principles of logic. Conditional (propositional) reasoning task describes relationship bw conditions: if allergic to peanuts, & eating peanuts produces breathing problem, a child has a breathing problem, therefor this child has eaten peanuts. Invalid-some other substance or med cond could cause problem. Syllogism two statements assumed to be true, plus a conclusion refer to quantities (words like: all, none, some: are conclusions valid, invalid, or indeterminate. Performance on a conditional and syllogism task are correlated. Reasoning influenced by: (1) whether statements include negative terms; (2) whether statements are concrete or abstract. Propositional calculus system for categorizing four kinds of reasoning used in analyzing propositions/statements. Antecedent first proposition (statement); if part of sentence. Two possible actions: 1. affirm antecedent or consequent; saying: it is true or: deny antecedent or consequent, saying it is false.
