Schacter and many other researchers distinguish between implicit and explicit memory . This lecture will begin by surveying some historical observations regarding implicit memory. It will then focus on a particular type of implicit memory, habits or skills, that are mediated by the basal ganglia. Particular attention will be given to lesion studies and studies of patients with. Parkinson"s disease, which is associated with impaired basal ganglia functioning. Patients have a reduction in the efficiency that functions their bg - because of a dopamine effeciency implicit memory occurs when previous experiences facilitate performance on a task that does not require conscious recollection of those experiences. Memory is not directly tested, but the performance is tested. Explicit memory occurs when the task requires conscious recollection of past experiences implicit memory.
