A single cell - 23 chromosome pairs - 23rd pair = the sex chromosomes determine - zygote - a boy or a girl. In typical prenatal sex development other chromosome pairs - additional physiological and psychological characteristics. The egg - x chromosome sperm - x or y chromosome. Thought for the day: how much is determined in that one instance??! Until 6 weeks - the female and male embryos - virtually identical - the sex glands look virtually identical. 3rd month hormones encourage further sex differentiation - development of external genitalia.
