PSYC 3310 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Offender Profiling, Homicide, Meta-Analysis
Document Summary
At the core of criminal profiling is belief that you can tell something about the offender from detailed careful analysis of the crime scene (info about the crime, where, when, what, why). This information is used to draw up hypotheses about who actually committed the crime (gender, age, personality traits etc. ) A profile instructs investigators to look for a particular type of person and ignore other types of people. Murderers who kill 3 or more people in separate events, with a cooling-off period between murders. A distinct aspect that presumably reveals the personality of the killer (e. g a particular form of torture used or a particular sexual activity). Training is controlled by law enforcement such as the fbi, rcmp and behavioral sciences. Jobs are usually rare, usually in law enforcement rather than psychology. Lasted from oct 2nd till oct 22, 2002. Takes place in virginia, maryland and washington dc. 13 people were shot, killing 10 and wounding 3.
