Any person charged with an offence has the right (f) except in the case of an offence under military law tried before a military tribunal, to the benefit of trial by jury where the maximum punishment for the offence is imprisonment for five years or a more severe punishment. Basic requirements to serve on a jury in canada (cid:0)canadian citizen (cid:0)age of majority (cid:0)most provinces/territories: 18 years or older (cid:0)british columbia: 19 years or older (cid:0)yukon: 21 years or older (cid:0)resident of jurisdiction in which the crime was committed, not necessarily where the suspect lives. If you are a student, you may get an exemption, because you may live there now, but permanent residence is somewhere else. More complicated for first nations who live on reserves. Does your work exempt you from jury service certain jobs eliminate you from jury duty types of occupations tied to legal system, not community of peers but specified group tied to legal system.
