PSYC 3430 Lecture 2: PSYC 3430 Chapter 2
Document Summary
Most research done in usa (some in canada/europe) Gustave le bon: wrote one of the first books on how groups as a whole (bigger groups) influence the cognition of individual people. Didn"t do proper research - watched individual people observed how the smartest person could influence others and start becoming stupid with the group. Groups are real as are group processes: groupmind = hypothetical mental force linking group members together the group will overpower the individual, sherif: study of norm formation. Groups are influential research (haslam, 2008 & 2009) out of the university of exeter, Queensland, and kansas - health and wellbeing (positive recovery of stroke victims), memory, strong sense of identity. Objectivity is required: 1) theories that organize knowledge/hypotheses 2) research procedures to test hypotheses 3) reliable and valid measurement. Reliability = consistency are the results of the test consistent over repeated trials.
