The pharmacy profession was a very early adopter of software. Canada record medications and related information electronically in a pharmacy practice. The ppms stores data locally (all patient information must be kept confidential with security measures). Additionally, processes must be in place to ensure that data and transactions are backed up daily, to ensure the integrity of records. Community pharmacies (and their records), are one part of a larger array of points of care settings. In some provinces, pharmacy information may be transmitted to a provincial drug information system (dis) or electronic health record (ehr) (see: chapter 2).
