Reports of student sexual harassment is on the rise: incidences, types pf harassment, gender differences. Experiences of harassment more stressful for girls than for boys. Gender differences in classifying behaviour as sexual harassment. Incidence of sexual harassment: difficult to assess. Sexual harassment in the workplace: unwelcome verbal or physical behaviour when: Submission to or rejection of the behaviour forms the basis for work related decisions (quid pro quo) The behaviour creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive work environment (hostile environment) Incidence: common place around the globe, most commonly takes form of sexual remarks and jokes, occupational characteristics related to sexual harassment. Military: target characteristics related to sexual harassment. Consequences: physiological consequences, physical consequences, effects of hostile environment, effects of labeling experience as harassment. Explanations: sex role spillover theory: in workplaces with unequal concentrations of men and women, gender is highly salient attribute.
