Lecture 7
4) Practice Makes Permanent
Sometimes people don’t “know” something because
they have forgotten it, NOT because they never
learned it. o Having to repeatedly re-learn material is
highly inefficient Studying hard doesn’t protect
against forgetting, but practice does
Distribution of practice is more important than amount
of practice.
o Memory is more enduring when practice is spaced out
5) “Re-membering > Re-studying”
Recalling information and receiving
feedback is much more effective for
retention than simply re-studying the
information. o This is called the “Testing-
Effect”
Frequent informal quizzing can be a helpful
tool for reminding oneself of information in a
way that will promote long-lasting memory.
