Document Summary

Repress: information is forgotten and you don"t even know that its there. Freud thought that symptoms were feelings of unresolved conflict. Id = primary process (the most basic, bottom line, everyone starts there). It is the pleasure principle, wants to avoid pain and have pleasure. The id cannot delay gratification, the ego can delay and understands connections between things. Superego operates on the morality principle, and understands right from wrong. Freud was interested in the focus of satisfaction (ex: oral stage, focus of satisfaction is in the area of the mouth) Reaction formation: take on the opposite feeling of what they really feel. Displacement: not getting angry at the real target, getting angry at someone else. Rationalization and intellectualization: knows anger and explains it, comes up with intellectual models, but its not true. You can change unresolved aggression and anger into working in construction. We find productive outlets when we sublimate, for these unconscious feelings.
