Mothering versus motherhood:
How we define mothers is culturally produced.
Motherhood is the institutions (rules regulations expectations) this is oppressive to
women depresses and limits them. He also says that can be changed but secondly
there are other ways to, such as mothering (raising children).
Feminism only critique motherhood NOT mothering.
How is motherhood created? Motherhood as a cultural institution has changed
throughout history, it is continually defined, meaning and practice is defined
constantly and varies yearly. What causes it to change? In a result and response
to significant social and economic change of people.
First time it was changed of social change is the transition (5000 B.C.) when
societies from hunting and gathering to economic societies. Second, 18 century,
transition from agricultural based economy to industrial based economy that was
the industrial revolution (world war). The next is in the 1990’s; the third

A good mother?
Complete different from present time. Cooking, nurturing, clothing—busy doing
unpaid economic work on a farm—doing necessary productive work. Normally have
814 children. Work ranges from Safe to dangerous. Children will also assist in house
work that is age appropriate. Parents had children to work (economic asset) brought
money. They loved their children but had expectations. Concept of children is
culturally produced as well. They were not different in terms of cognitive, spiritually
to adults. Childhood came distinct to adulthood over time until 200 years ago.
Children were before seen bad and deviant. They became good through socialization
they are born bad then turns good(via religious). Before beating children were good in
order to turn them good, which now puts them in jail. Good mothering was hanging
their babies to trees back then. Village wet nurse (poor people with no nutrition not
healthy and would breastfeed several children_ to breastfeed babies when biological
mothers could not. Why was this important? Because children would die due to no
option but to give them to wetnurse(mothers were not looked as bad mother).

Then professions were denied to women. It was against the
