Legacy of Colonialism 18 century colonialism 20 century  nationalism National Independence Movements Origins: - WW2 - colonists had significant impact on minds of colonies - atrocities committed during ww2, had significant impact how colonized perceived the colonizers - process of socio-psychological aspect that questions the cultural superiority of colonizersww2=question whether Europe was most civilized/developed area at that time - most of effort in war against Nazism/fascism based on idea of defending democratic rightsmany people actually recruited to fight in frontlines of war=contradiction; democracy absent in colonies by - there was idea of using colonizers own discourse against them, in the name of democracy - in terms of origins of movements, significant grievances across colonies where colonial systems based in inequalities grievances were many and affected almost every member of colonized societiespoor farmers, elites who lost power, local businessman, etc. system worked against them, but also provided unity - Another factor to origins: availability of leaders who could actually capacitate the political movements to set up armed guerilla movements to fight against colonial rule - The colonized merit were to engage all classes into political movements that opposed colonialists Features: - Social class alliance - nationalist ideology: distinction between “us and them” or oppressed nation vs. colonialists = boosted discourse against the West/north - concept of self-rule: colonialist believed colonized were less smart and less developed to help them selves, but the main argument from the colonized was that they could rule them selves (i.e. India, Africa, etc.) self rule: build a system based on state’s interest - structural reform? : there was a question on 2 dimensions1. national liberation: refer to freeing a nation from political control of external forces (common in all colonies). 2. Social liberation: necessary structural reforms that enable poor to have better position in society that may imply access to resources, land refor
