Week 9: Nation and Violence (cont.) (06/11) Readings: • Razack, Gender Racial Violence and Spatialized Justice: The Murder of Pamela George (CK) • Crenshaw, Mapping the Margins (G&K) • battering and rape, once seen as private family matters and aberrational (errant sexual aggression) are now recognized as part of a broad scale system of domination that affects women as a class • recognizing as social and systemic what was formally perceived as isolated and individual has also characterized the identity politics of african Americans, other people o colour, gays and lesbians, among others identity based politics have been a source of strength, community, and intellectual development • • social power works to exclude or marginalize those who are different • identity politics conflates or ignores intragroup differences • ignoring difference within groups contributes to tension among groups • women or colour..never both • women of colour are poverished or lack job skulls because of gender and class oppression, compounded by racially discriminatory employment and housing practices of women of colour • many immigrant women were reluctant to leave even the most abusive of partners for fear of being deported • prefer protection against deportation than batters • language barriers preventing support • enactment of domestic violence wavier of marriage fraud provisions illustrate modest attempts to respond to certain problems —ineffective intersectional location of women of colour not consider or language barrier • women of colour, most marginal socially and economically, unable to take advantage of waver • because women of colour experience racisim in ways not always the same as those experienced by men of colour and sexism in ways not always parallel to experiences of white women, antiracism and feminism are limited even on their own terms • gender, race, class intersect to create the articular context in which women of colour experience violence, certain choices made by allies can reproduce intersectional subordination within the resistance strategies designed to respond to the problem inaccessibility of domestic violence support services to non-English speaking women • • many not allowed in shelters because not able to speak english well enough • sometimes refuse to allow a friend to translate • shelters imposed without regard to the disempowering consequences of women who didn't match the kind of client the shelter administrators imagined • failed to accomplish basic priority of shelter movement— to get women out of danger • women of power aren't women and colour and can decide if the marginalized women receive the support they need or not or who will survive. Film: Finding Dawn Lecture: Nation and Violence • “Intersectional subordination need not be intentionally produced; in fact, it is frequently the consequence of the imposition of one burden that interacts with pre-existing vulnerabilities to create yet another dimension of disempowerment.” [Crenshaw, 202) • other - coloured, raced, homosexual, refugee/immigrant • ways in which violence police borders and protect the white self • i am this bc i am not that —-power relation dominance vs subordination • violence has meaning but may not be intentionally produced Violence is Socially and Historically Constructed • As a gendered/racialized tool of colonization and nation-building; • As intersectional i.e. it is shaped by gender, race, class, sexuality, etc. (Crenshaw) • As relational i.e. it produces both the perpetrator and victim (i.e. settlers and Aboriginal people). • As historical and structural – violence is ‘social and systemic’ (Crenshaw) rather than the result of ‘sick individuals’. It is rooted in our social structures and shared histories. • canada as a white settler nation, indigenous into reserves (sites of containing otherness) • salad effect (little bit of everything) • if u starve a community you will kill it • epistemic violence (knowledge) Colonial History of Dispossession & Exclusion • Settler Colonial Violence is material & symbolic: – Discourse of ‘empty land’ (erasure of Aboriginal presence) – Dehumanization (othering) of those who occupied the land as “uncivilized” – Justification for taking their lands (dispossession/theft) – Displacement/relocation onto reserves & slums – Objectification and othering of Aboriginal women as the basis of sexual violence – Settlers “come to know themselves as entitled to the land” (kit, 37) and entitled to colonized bodies – how are we interpreting the body in the court case – whiteness as a system of power remains unquestioned – history that has produced this violence – structured violence – colonial history of Canada must be questioned – racialized gendered bodies (pameale george) as dispensable bodies – colonial settler violence History Structures the Present • Contemporary eviction, displacement, forced/ structured migration from reserves to cities for housing and work (flooding of reserves) • Spatial Segregation: Aboriginal peoples are structured into the marginal spaces of the city e.g. slum (degenerate, contaminant) • Ghettoization/Slumification: spaces are marginalized i.e. made into slums by ongoing settler violence (Slum Administration) e.g. policing, criminalization, incarceration, housing cutbacks, racist stereotypes of Aboriginal women as promiscuous and Aboriginal men as violent, under/un/employment, poverty, etc. • Effect: – Aboriginality = depravity versus Whiteness = respectability – Urban cleansing - containing/evicting racialized bodies • shift from dominant story to a complete story of canada the nation • process of control and genocide • claim that the land is empty (colonial discourses) • narrative of discovery is racist because white men interpretation / european • how europeans viewed the land— emptied the land so had to fill it with their own system of control • dominant subject uses this technique to say the other is nothing, only something in my eyes • other is emptied out of any kinda claims of humanity and refilled as a certain kind of huma
