Firms start facing global competition when they: offshore, outsource to low cost suppliers, look for free trade. To deal with pressure from other companies you can: empower employees, or exploit them, or replace them. Embracing your employees involves relying on them to enhance your competitive advantage, by applying better human resource practice and training (like working at google) You can exploit the employees by squeezing them, downsizing, reducing wages, and making exible workers (example is foxcon) The third idea is to replace the workers entirely by making automated production lines using machines. It"s not china taking the jobs of people, its mechanization. Factories don"t need many workers because robots now do the work. Improve work by having strong labour movements, and a social democratic government. Qwl (quality of working life): gives employee satisfaction, commitment, better wages, more productivity, and better work relationships: the problem is it can decrease performance and get rid of the in uence of unions.
