SOSC 1800 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Developmental Psychology, Participant Observation, Cultural Capital
Document Summary
Experts were focused on how the landscape/geography affect childhood and children. The most ideal space, people think, is the country side (but children are raised in cities which are dynamic landscapes) It(cid:859)s i(cid:373)po(cid:396)ta(cid:374)t to (cid:272)o(cid:374)side(cid:396) (cid:272)hild(cid:396)e(cid:374)(cid:859)s opi(cid:374)io(cid:374)s, (cid:374)eeds a(cid:374)d e(cid:454)pe(cid:396)ie(cid:374)(cid:272)es of the (cid:449)o(cid:396)ld. Research influences policies: policies need to produce research to find out what childrens needs are. Need to explain adult perspective on childhoods so that we recognize the assumptions and the power dynamics. Comes from the view that adults and children are fundamentally separated by their differing levels of cognitive development which are biologically based. Developmental psychology was criticized for trying to develop a universal model of childhood. Development psychology failed to account for differences among children as a group, which is fractured by race, class, gender, geographic locations.
