Answer all exam questions in essay format including introduction, main body, and
conclusion; avoid 1 person. Offer readable handwriting, doublespaced; don’t use the
margin to the left. The coverpage of your booklet should include: name, lastname;
student number; course sigla and number; tutorial number; name of tutorial leader. If
you are submitting more than one booklet, they should be numbered in sequence. Each
question is assigned a total of 50 points. There will be two questions per key (A, B) on
the exam. The Midterm Exam is worth 20% of your overall grade.
Define the terms “child” and “childhood”. Based on the work of Aries and Warnock
Fernea, offer a critical account of how children were understood and treated in
premodern/medieval times taking into consideration different cultural contexts.
What is the western history/philosophy of childhood? Provide an overview and give a
comparative account of how Locke and Rousseau differed in their opinions. Show how
their ideas influenced contemporary constructions of childhood.
In which way has the field of sociology traditionally viewed children and what is the
‘new’ sociology of childhood? Discuss Corsaro’s and Matthew’s ideas on the subject
and how these are critical of earlier sociological models.
Outline some of Freud’s ideas, particularly in regards to children, which continue to be
so influential today. Comment on the significance of the Analysis of a Phobia in a
FiveYearold Boy and, more specifically, on the ‘animetaphor’ of horse/giraffe.
Explain “the anthropology of childhood”. Describe the three characteristic methods for
data collection and, in referring to Mead and Freeman, discuss the strengths and
