Lecture6 Dependency Theory THE DEPENDENCY THEORY This theory was a distinctly Latin American Model This theory helped to shift the focus from a Theoretical Theory produced by the first world to a Historical Theory produced by the people in the developing world Therefore it shifted the focus to the perspective of the developing world THE DEPENDENCY THEORY Developing countries are negatively affected by their ongoing relationship with the developed West What Gunter Frank called The development of Underdevelopment The Development of UnderdevelopmentDeveloping countries are negatively affected by their ongoing relationship with the developed West What Gunter Frank called The development of Underdevelopment This analysis of development paths came out of the dependency school of developmentIt presented a challenge to those who had advocated a modernization model of developmentThe dependency theorists suggested that because of the trend that grew out of the third worlds experience of colonization third world countries have historically been in the position of producing for the colonial and later metropolitan centers of the industrialized world agriculture natural resources and cheap laborAs a result development in the third world was geared outward to meet the needs and demands of the industrialized centers rather than to devise and implement development to meet these countries internal needs and goalsBecause of this trend third world countries were left to importthe manufactured goods they needed and left to export their commodities and since prices of Raw Materials declinesprices of Manufactured Goods rdincreases this left the 3 world in perpetually unequal relationships with the industrialized centers and further entrenched their underdevelopment this theory emphasized
