Aristotle there are 4 types of causes : for a full causal explanation, aristotle believed that all 4 types of causes must be present, first thing required for anything (ie: building house) is the material cause (bricks, prongs, etc, 2ndly, the efficient cause is required (ie: the brick layer, builder, 3rdly, the formal cause is required (ie: the plan/blue print, 4thly, the final cause must be known it is the purpose (ie: why is the house being built in the first place) which was the most important of the 4. That"s why some progress of math was possible: therefor use this primitive method to make this more successful, descartes is going to take the germs of mathematics and going to develop the method for learning in general, therefore the important thing for descartes is that the method is already in the mind, and all the philosopher can do is develop it and not create it!
